Introducing the Tranquil Mind Meditation Class — Learn to Meditate, Free
A complete, step-by-step path to genuine peace and happiness — now available as a free online course.
Most people who try meditation quit. Not because they’re lazy, and not because they lack discipline. They quit because somewhere along the way, meditation started to feel like a chore — something to grit your teeth through, a fight with your own mind that you keep losing.
If that’s been your experience, I have good news.
Today we’re launching the Tranquil Mind Meditation Class — a free, online, step-by-step course that teaches a kind of meditation that’s meant to feel good. You can start right now:
Learn to Meditate — the free Tranquil Mind class
Let me tell you what it is, why it’s different, and who it’s for.
This is not another stress-reduction app
You’ll relax. You’ll probably sleep better, and that tends to happen fast. But this practice goes much deeper than relaxation dressed up in spiritual language.
Tranquil Mind is drawn directly from the Buddha’s earliest recorded teachings. It was rediscovered in our own lifetime by an American Buddhist monk named Bhante Vimalaramsi, who ordained in Thailand, spent twenty years in Asian monasteries, and eventually came home to open a retreat center and teach this practice until his death in 2023. This course passes along what he taught — a complete path to the kind of peace and happiness that doesn’t depend on everything in your life going perfectly.
That’s a big claim. The course is built to let you test it for yourself.
What makes this practice different
If you’ve tried meditation before, a few things here will surprise you.
Meditation should feel good. We smile during this practice. We generate warmth. We are kind to ourselves. If you’ve ever come away from a meditation session feeling like you failed, you’ll find this is a completely different experience. People on these retreats laugh — a lot.
The object is loving-kindness, not the breath. Instead of watching your breath or repeating a mantra, you rest your attention on a warm, glowing feeling — the kind of gentle happiness you feel holding a baby, petting a dog, or thinking of someone you love. That feeling becomes your home base.
Tranquility and insight grow together. Many traditions split meditation into a calming practice and a separate insight practice. Here, they happen at the same time, in every single session.
You stay awake to the world. You won’t disappear into a trance. You’ll still hear the birds and feel the breeze. The feeling of loving-kindness simply gets turned up while the rest of life stays present.
And there’s one revolutionary step most methods skip. It’s called the Relax step, and it’s the heart of everything. More on that in a moment.
The 6Rs — the heart of the practice
Here’s the truth nobody tells beginners: your mind is going to wander. Constantly. That’s not a failure. It’s the whole game.
Every time you notice your mind has drifted and you gently come back, you’ve just succeeded. If your mind wanders twenty-five times in a session and you return twenty-five times, you didn’t have a bad meditation — you had twenty-five successful repetitions of the one skill that matters.
The course teaches you exactly how to come back, using a simple sequence called the 6Rs:
- Recognize — Notice your mind has wandered. No judgment, just notice.
- Release — Drop the distraction. Don’t analyze it; let it go like a hot coal.
- Relax — Soften the tension the distraction created. This is the key step.
- Re-smile — Put the smile back, and your warmth and energy lift.
- Return — Gently float your attention back to the feeling of loving-kindness.
- Repeat — Stay there until your mind wanders again. Then do it all again.
That third step — Relax — is what sets this practice apart. The Buddha taught that craving is the root of our dissatisfaction, and craving always shows up in the body as tension and tightness. When you consciously soften that tension, you’re releasing craving directly, in real time. Each relaxation is a tiny taste of relief — a small ahhh — and over hundreds and thousands of repetitions, it adds up to a genuine transformation of the mind.
You’ll feel it. It’s not your imagination.
What you’ll learn, step by step
The class walks you through the whole path, in order, so you’re never guessing what to do next:
- The Four Smiles — a thirty-second opening that completely changes your starting state.
- Generating loving-kindness for yourself — because you can’t pour from an empty cup.
- Choosing your Spiritual Friend — the one person you’ll radiate warmth to, with a clear checklist for picking the right one.
- Working with a wandering mind, pain, and the Five Hindrances — so distraction stops being a problem.
- A complete session, start to finish — exactly when to sit, how long, where, and how.
- Walking meditation — a simple, powerful complement that carries your practice into daily life.
- Breaking Down the Barriers — extending warmth beyond your circle to neutral people, family, and even difficult people.
- Radiating to the Six Directions — one of the most beautiful practices in all of meditation, and the doorway to deeper states.
The online course expands on the book with videos, written lessons, guided meditations, exercises, and quizzes — everything you need to build a real, daily practice.
Who this is for
Everyone is welcome here.
If you’ve never meditated before, this is designed to be the shortest, clearest, most practical on-ramp possible. The goal isn’t to turn you into a scholar — it’s to get you actually meditating, right away.
If you’re an experienced practitioner coming from another tradition, you already have the discipline and the foundation. You’ll just set a few habits aside and give this a clean trial, then judge it from your own direct experience.
Either way, the path works for both.
Here’s the promise
If you show up every day, meditate for thirty minutes, follow the instructions, and stay patient and kind with yourself — you will see changes. Maybe not overnight. But within weeks, you’ll notice. And within months, the people around you will too.
Stress eases. Sleep improves. Relationships warm up. And slowly, your happiness stops depending on whether the day went your way, because you’re training your mind to generate well-being from the inside.
That’s the deal.
It’s free — and there are real people to help
Tranquil Mind is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and this practice is offered freely. The class costs nothing. And if you get stuck or have questions, you can book a free, one-on-one session with a real teacher — anywhere in the world — at TheTranquilMind.org. A good teacher can save you months of confusion, and we’d genuinely love to hear from you.
